URBAN AIR MOBILITY: AN

OPPORTUNITY FOR GEORGIA

The world is now entering a new era of mobility. From electric scooters to self-driving cars, we will soon have even more choices for how to travel within cities. The same technologies that are enabling new forms of ground transportation are also enabling new types of aircraft.  A new industry is emerging to address a market now being called “urban air mobility (UAM)” in which passengers and cargo are transported by short-ranged electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft at an affordable price point.
        On January 23,
Georgia Tech hosted a workshop along with the University of Georgia, Arizona State University and Newsweek where they collectively addressed the question, “How can Atlanta and all of Georgia participate in the economic opportunity of UAM?”

GA Smart is excited to welcome the Georgia Planning Association(GPA) as its newest partner.  As an official Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA), GPA has spent more than 50 years planning for great communities in Georgia.  Embracing how technology impacts the planning profession, the built environment, and all of our lives is vital for planning for the next 50 years.
The 2019 GPA Spring Conference, focused on Connected Communities will be held on March 27 in Decatur.  Connection can mean different things to different people, but one thing is certain: as both people and communities, we need connection to each other to thrive.  We’re looking forward to a session focused on the Georgia Smart Communities Challenge, with speakers from Georgia Tech, ARC, Gwinnett County, and the City of Chamblee.  A number of other sessions are focused on technology, including a mobile workshop with a demonstration of connected vehicle technology on the North Avenue Smart Corridor, which will take place while riding in a Tesla.  You can learn more and register here.  Don’t miss this fantastic opportunity to experience Decatur, earn AICP CM credits, and network with your fellow colleagues.
